The Most Orwellian Press Release of the Week…
June 3rd, 2011
… goes to Julian Fantino, for his breathtakingly inane non-apology to the Italian-Canadian community for the internments and other government harassment during World War II:
When war broke out in Europe in September 1939, Canada was governed by wartime emergency measures that had a significant impact on the lives of many Italian-Canadians.
Yes, I’ll bet it did.
Unfortunately, because the new memorial will be in downtown Ottawa, this asinine sop will actually count in the Conservative favour on my new Pork Barrel scoreboard when it’s updated in a week or two.

Did he have any relatives that were inturned? David Suzuki was.

I don’t know, croghan. You’d have to ask him.

Do I read this correctly? They’re spending 250,000 on a room inside a seniors long term care facility? That’s the memorial?
Are they asking for donations of archival items from the residents? Is there more to the place?
If yes, a seniors’ long term care complex it is, how much of the ‘public’ is supposed to go through this ‘exhibit’? I’ve never been encouraged to hang out at such places unless I had relatives there.
Also, they couldn’t say it was a negative impact? In fairness, the line you reprinted seems to be blabspeak of the article, not a direct quote of Fantino’s.
Sixth Estate
Yeah, you read it right…

The wording is interesting: do they intend to commemorate the people who were interned or their internment?
Coming from a former high ranking authoritarian who thought his primary function was locking people up, the difference may perhaps be significant.
Sixth Estate
Good question, ktron. I’m not sure.
