Let’s Do the Time Warp Again
So, as you may have heard by now, the new line from the Harper regime is that we can’t trust the NDP because they voted against World War II. Even though they didn’t exist in 1939. And even though the left-wing party that did exist at the time voted for the war. Facts? Facts? Eww! We have no need of those in Canada!
Since we’re talking about absurd historical fictions here, it’s worth pointing out that the Conservative Party of Canada didn’t vote in favour of fighting Hitler either, and much the same reason: they didn’t exist then. Social Credit existed, though. At the time they were very busy spreading the word about a Jewish banking elite controlling world politics. You know, just like Hitler.
Otherwise, though, Harper makes complete sense. Continuing the occupation of Afghanistan is exactly like stopping Hitler. My advice to the government is not to appease the Taliban by ceding the Sudetenland to them. If that happens, the Taliban will invade Poland. And we know what happens after that.

I think it worthwhile to point out that John A Macdonald, the first Conservative prime minister, never voted in favour of fighting Hitler. Macdonald is also known for voter suppression and rigging the voting process in his favour. Certain things just form the backbone of a political party.

Part of the problem is that we wait until the metaphoric 1939 to attempt to head off crises. Had Hitler been stopped, say, in 1923, Germany might never have been a threat. But that might have involved little things like dismantling the British and French Empires, halting the advancing American hegemony and dealing with economic dislocation in a way that might have softened the blows sustained by the peoples of the USSR. The sad appearance of truth is that people like to sit in Ottawa, Washington, London, Paris, Rome, Belgrade, Madrid et al, and promote wars because the people who command the performance are only the audience for the hostilities and those who literally and figuratively charge an arm and leg (and sometimes a complete life) to further their own selfish purposes. Think if the Afghans hadn’t had to deal with the repeated invasions and if the Coalition of the Willing had dealt with Iraq through diplomacy and policies directed at creating a better life for the populations of these two countries. Likely, there would be no Taliban, no Al-Quaeda, no September 11, 2001 and none of the subsequent fallout, including our mission that has cost so much and resulted in little other than a subject for Don Cherry rants and a slough full of damaged and terminated Canadian lives, not to mention the death and destruction in Afghanistan. We are, with our current governments in the aforementioned capitals, in the process of continuing the crises handed to us and creating new crises so as to perpetuate a constant state of war and deprivation. I wish us all success in changing course, but I can’t say that I can engender a great deal of optimism on that score.
